Perfect Creamy Mashed Potatoes

Indulge in the ultimate comfort food with these creamy mashed potatoes! They pair beautifully with any meal and are a classic side dish everyone loves.

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds Yukon gold or Russet potatoes (about 8 medium Yukon gold or 4 medium Russet)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature, cut into 4 pieces (plus more to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon salt, divided (plus more to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper (or to taste)
  • ½ cup whole milk, warmed (plus more as needed)

Instructions

  1. Scrub the potatoes under cool water. You can choose to peel them or leave the skins on, depending on your preference.
  2. Cut the potatoes into 1-inch pieces and place them in a pot filled with cold water. Add ½ teaspoon of salt to the water.
  3. Bring the pot to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, cook the potatoes for 12-15 minutes until very tender when pierced with a fork but not falling apart. Drain the potatoes in a colander.
  4. Return the drained potatoes to the hot pot. Let them sit for 2-3 minutes to allow any excess moisture to evaporate.
  5. Add the butter pieces to the hot potatoes and mash them using a potato masher.
  6. Stir in the remaining ½ teaspoon salt, pepper, and half of the warm milk. Mix well, then add the rest of the milk (and more if needed) until you achieve your desired creaminess. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed before serving. Enjoy!
