This hearty Amish hamburger steak bake layers potatoes, onions, beef patties, and cheese in a creamy homemade gravy. Comfort food at its best!

Ingredients

  • lbs ground beef
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups milk divided
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 –5 medium russet potatoes thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat and Prep

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set it aside.

Step 2: Season and Brown the Patties

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Shape the seasoned beef into 6 evenly sized patties.
  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and brown the patties on both sides—no need to cook them through fully. Set aside.

Step 3: Make the Gravy

  • In the same skillet, whisk together 1 cup of the milk with the flour until smooth.
  • Slowly whisk in the remaining cup of milk and cook over medium heat until the gravy thickens.
  • Season with additional salt and pepper to taste.

Step 4: Layer the Casserole

  • Spread half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish.
  • Top with half of the sliced onions.
  • Place the browned hamburger patties on top.
  • Layer the remaining potatoes and onions over the beef.
  • Pour the warm gravy evenly over the entire dish.

Step 5: Bake

  • Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 1 hour.
  • Remove the foil, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top, and return to the oven.
  • Bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy

  • Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving.
  • Pairs beautifully with a crisp green salad, steamed green beans, or homemade bread.
