This moong dal recipe is very simple but delicious dal recipe where moong lentils cooked with spicy onion tomato gravy.Must try this aromatic moong dal tadka recipe at home.

Ingredients

For soaking yellow moong dal

  • 200 grams yellow moong dal
  • 600 ml water [ add if required ]

Ingredients for moong dal tadka

  • 1 medium size onion [ chopped ]
  • 1 medium size de seeded tomato [ chopped ]
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped ginger
  • 2 green chilies [ chopped ]
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • salt as required
  • 1/2 tablespoons kasoori methi or dry fenugreek leaves [optional ]
  • 3 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves or cilantro [ optional ]

Tempering for moong dal recipe

  • 2 tablespoon ghee
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seed
  • 4 to 5 garlic
  • 2 green chili vertically slit
  • 1/4 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • pinch of hing

Instructions

  • how to make moong dal tadka
  • At first for soaking yellow moong dal in a mixing bowl pour 200 grams moong dal or yellow lentils.
  • Then wash the dal thoroughly, after that drain completely.
  • Again pour water and soak dal for at least 30 min to 45 min.
  • Now for cooking moong dal tadka recipe heat oil in a pan, spread it with a spatula.
  • Then add bay leaf, cumin seed, stir it in low flame until cumin seed began to splutter.
  • Next, add chopped onion, saute onions for 4 to 5 min until it gets completely translucent and slightly golden brown.
  • After that add 1 medium size de-seeded chopped tomato, saute for 5 to 6 min until it gets slightly mushy.
  • After that add chopped ginger, green chili, and saute them for some time on medium to low flame.
  • Then add a few teaspoons of red chili powder, turmeric powder, garam masala powder and a pinch of salt.
  • Cook further 4 to 5 min in medium to low flame
  • Now in a pressure cooker pour soaked moong dal, a mixture which we made recently also pour water.
  • Close the lid of the pressure cooker and pressure cook moong dal for 5 to 6 whistle in medium flame.
  • Next transfer the cooked moong dal to a kadai and simmer for some time also check the taste of the salt, if required add more.
  • Now tempering for moong dal recipe add a few tablespoons of ghee or oil to a pan.
  • Then add cumin seed and fry them till they splutter don't burn them.
  • After that make the flame low and add 4 to 5 garlic and 2 vertically slit green chilli.
  • Next, switch off the flame and add red chili powder , garam masala powder, a pinch of hing , quickly stir everything
  • Finally pour this mixture into cooked yellow moong dal and our simple but aromatic moong dal tadka recipe is completed.
