Upma recipe is a popular south indian breakfast dish which is made with suji , nuts , spices and curry leaves. To make these tasty suji upma or rava upma recipe for your breakfast must follow the below step-by-step instructions.

Ingredients

Upma ingredients

  • 1 cup or 200 grams of suji or rava
  • 6 tablespoons ghee or clarified butter
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seed
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seed
  • 1 teaspoon chana dal
  • 1 teaspoon urad dal
  • 10 to 12 cashew nuts
  • 2 tablespoons peanut
  • pinch of hing
  • 8 to 10 fresh curry leaves
  • 1 medium size chopped onion
  • 4 chopped green chili
  • 1/2 tablespoon chopped ginger
  • 1 medium size chopped carrots
  • 1 medium size chopped redish
  • 4 tablespoons chopped french beans
  • 3 tablespoons of green peas
  • 3 tablespoons of freshly chopped coriander leaves
  • 500 ml water
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoon of sugar

Instructions

  • Preparation for suji upma
  • At first, for preparing suji upma in a pan melt desi ghee on low flame.
  • After that add rava or suji to the pan, stir often and roast the rava in lower flame for sometime.
  • When sooji grains become fragrant, dry and separate from each other, Switch off the gas and immediately transfer the roasted rava in a separate plate
  • Tempering for rava upma
  • Now , tempering spices for rava upma in a pan melt ghee or clarified butter on low flame.
  • Next add mustard seed, cumin seed, saute them in low flame till you hear crackling sound of mustard seed.
  • Now add chana dal, urad dal and stir the dal till they become brown a little bit.
  • Then add cashew nuts, peanuts saute them in medium flame till they become slightly golden brown.
  • Next add pinch of hing, 8 to 10 fresh curry leaves and saute for sometime til they become crispy.
  • Now add chopped onions , and saute them in medium to low flame till they become translucent.
  • Then add chopped green chili, chopped ginger, cook them further sometime.
  • Now for cooking vegetable upma add chopped carrots, chopped reddish, chopped french beans, green peas .
  • Cover and cook the veggies for sometime till they are slightly tender.
  • Finally add freshly chopped coriander leaves and mix properly.
  • How to make upma
  • Now to cook upma recipe pour water into a pan.
  • After that add black pepper powder, salt, sugar to balance the taste of the spices.
  • When water starts to rolling boil in medium high flame.
  • Make the flame low and add the roasted rava in intervals, immediately stir and mix the rava with the boiling water, this methods help lump free rava upma.
  • At this stage you will see all the rava grain absorbs water and it gets cooked well and our rava upma recipe is complete.

Notes

Upma Recipe Note

  1. If you want you can add peanuts. Make sure you first fry or roast the peanuts separately and then add them as a topping or garnish on the suji ka upma.
  2. Though i don't like tomatoes in my upma recipe but if you want you can add tomatoes when the onions become soft after that cook them until the tomatoes become soft.
