Indulge in the ultimate chocolate experience with this moist and decadent homemade chocolate cake made entirely from scratch. This is the chocolate cake every baking enthusiast needs in their collection!

Ingredients

Chocolate Cake:

  • 2 cups (260g) all-purpose flour (measured correctly)
  • 2 cups (414g) sugar
  • ¾ cup (85g) natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk
  • 1 cup (240ml) vegetable oil
  • 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240ml) hot water

  • 2 ½ cups (560g) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 9 cups (1035g) powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (114g) natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4–5 tbsp (60-75ml) water or milk
  • Pinch of salt

Chocolate Ganache:

  • 6 oz (1 cup | 169g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup heavy whipping cream
  • Sprinkles (for garnish)

Instructions

Make the Cakes:

  1. Prepare three 8-inch cake pans by lining the bottoms with parchment paper and greasing the sides.
  2. Preheat your oven to 300°F (148°C).
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together all the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Add the eggs, buttermilk, and vegetable oil to the dry ingredients and mix well until combined.
  5. Mix the vanilla extract with the hot water, then add it to the batter. Stir until fully incorporated.
  6. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake for 30-33 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few crumbs.
  8. Once baked, allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to cooling racks to cool completely.
