This Thai Iced Tea is the ultimate creamy, spiced indulgence that brings the vibrant flavors of your favorite local Thai bistro right into your own kitchen. There is something mesmerizing about that iconic gradient of deep amber tea meeting a velvet-like pour of sweetened condensed milk. It’s a sensory experience from start to finish—the aroma of star anise and vanilla wafting through the steam as the tea steeps, followed by the satisfying chill of that first sip over a glass packed with crushed ice.

I love serving this as a special treat during our weekend family dinners. It’s surprisingly simple to make, yet it feels incredibly sophisticated and decadent. Whether you’re pairing it with a spicy curry to cool your palate or enjoying it as a standalone afternoon pick-me-up, this recipe delivers that perfectly balanced, earthy sweetness that makes Thai tea so addictive.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Authentic Flavor at Home: Skip the takeout and enjoy that classic, restaurant-quality spiced profile whenever the craving hits.
  • Cost-Effective Luxury: Making a large batch at home is far more affordable than buying individual glasses at a cafe.
  • Customizable Sweetness: You have full control over the ratio of condensed milk to tea, allowing you to make it as rich or as light as you prefer.
  • Make-Ahead Friendly: The tea base can be brewed and chilled in advance, making it perfect for hosting or quick assembly.
  • Visual Wow Factor: The “marbling” effect as the milk settles into the tea is naturally stunning and perfect for sharing on your feed.

Ingredient Notes & Details

  • Thai Tea Mix: Look for traditional loose-leaf blends (like Number One Brand) which contain the necessary spices like star anise, crushed tamarind, and cardamom.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk: This provides the signature thick, jammy sweetness and creamy texture that defines this drink.
  • Evaporated Milk: Often used as a floater on top to add extra richness without the overwhelming sweetness of more condensed milk.
  • Granulated Sugar: Added to the hot tea base to ensure the sweetness is deeply infused before chilling.
  • Boiling Water: Essential for a strong steep; Thai tea needs to be quite concentrated to stand up to the ice and milk.

Natural Substitutions: For a dairy-free version, use sweetened condensed coconut milk and a splash of full-fat coconut milk on top. It adds a delicious tropical twist!

Step-by-Step Instructions

The secret to a great Thai Iced Tea is the strength of the brew. Start by steeping your loose-leaf tea mix in boiling water for at least 5 minutes. You want the liquid to be a very deep, dark orange—almost reddish. While the tea is still hot, stir in your sugar until completely dissolved. This is your “concentrate.”

Once brewed, strain the tea through a fine-mesh sieve or a traditional cloth tea filter to remove all the leaves. Let the tea cool to room temperature before transferring it to the refrigerator to chill thoroughly. When you’re ready to serve, fill a tall glass to the brim with crushed ice. Pour the chilled tea over the ice, leaving about an inch of space at the top. Finally, slowly pour your sweetened condensed milk or evaporated milk over the back of a spoon onto the surface. This technique allows the milk to slowly “bleed” into the tea, creating those beautiful, signature swirls.

Tips

  • Don’t Under-Steep: Thai tea needs to be strong; if it looks like regular black tea, it won’t have enough punch once the milk and ice are added.
  • Use Crushed Ice: Smaller ice pieces provide more surface area to chill the tea instantly and create a better texture.
  • Sweeten While Hot: Sugar dissolves much more efficiently in hot liquid than cold, ensuring a smooth sip every time.
  • Strain Twice: If using a very fine loose-leaf mix, strain it twice to ensure no “grittiness” ends up in your glass.
  • The Floater: Always add the milk last for the best visual presentation.

Storage & Reheating

The sweetened tea base can be stored in a glass pitcher in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. I do not recommend adding the milk until you are ready to serve, as it can change the texture over time. This drink is strictly meant to be served ice-cold, so no reheating is needed! If you have leftover brewed tea, you can even freeze it into ice cubes so your next glass doesn’t get watered down.

Serving & FAQs

Can I use regular black tea bags? While you can, you’ll miss out on the specific spices and the vibrant orange color. If you do use black tea, consider adding a whole star anise and a drop of vanilla extract to the steep.

Why is my tea not orange? Authentic Thai tea mixes often include a specific food coloring to achieve that neon-orange look. If yours is brown, you might be using a natural blend without the added color—it will still taste delicious!
