The sweet, woody aroma of cinnamon swirling into a cloud of vanilla and steeped tea is enough to make any afternoon feel like a cozy retreat. This Vanilla Cinnamon Milk Tea is my favorite way to hit the reset button after a hectic morning. It’s a warm, indulgent hug in a mug that balances the robustness of black tea with a creamy, spiced sweetness that lingers just long enough to make you crave the next sip.
I love serving this on chilly weekends when the family is gathered around, or even as a sophisticated treat for a midday brunch. There is something so visually inviting about the way the milk marbles into the dark tea, finished with a generous dusting of cinnamon on top. It’s not just a drink; it’s an experience that feels like it came straight from a high-end tea shop, yet it’s incredibly simple to whisk together in your own kitchen.
Why You’ll Love It
- Customizable Sweetness: You can easily adjust the honey or maple syrup to suit your personal palate.
- Aromatic Relaxation: The combination of vanilla and cinnamon acts as a natural aromatherapy session while you drink.
- Dairy-Free Friendly: This recipe tastes incredible with oat or almond milk, making it accessible for everyone.
- Healthier Indulgence: It satisfies that “dessert” craving without the heavy calories of a milkshake or pastry.
- Morning or Evening: Use decaf tea to turn this into a soothing bedtime ritual or caffeinated black tea for a cozy wake-up call.

Ingredient Notes & Details
- Black Tea: I recommend a strong Assam or English Breakfast. You need a tea with enough body to stand up to the milk and spices.
- Cinnamon Sticks: Steeping a whole stick provides a deeper, more woody flavor than just using ground cinnamon alone.
- Pure Vanilla Extract: High-quality extract makes a world of difference here. Avoid imitation vanilla to ensure that floral, sweet depth.
- Milk of Choice: Whole milk provides the richest texture, but oat milk is a fantastic secondary choice for its natural sweetness.
- Star Anise: This is optional but adds a beautiful, subtle licorice note and looks stunning as a garnish.
Step-by-Step Instructions
We begin by bringing fresh water to a gentle boil. Avoid a rolling, aggressive boil as it can scald the tea leaves and make them bitter. Once the water is ready, drop in your tea bags along with a cinnamon stick. Letting them steep together allows the heat to draw out the oils from the cinnamon, infusing the tea base with a natural, spicy warmth from the inside out.
While the tea steeps, we prepare the milk. For the best “tea shop” experience, heat your milk on the stove until it’s steaming but not boiling. If you have a frother, now is the time to use it to create that light, airy foam you see in the photos. Stir the vanilla extract and your preferred sweetener directly into the warm milk.
The final assembly is the best part. Remove the tea bags and pour the fragrant tea into your favorite mugs. Slowly pour the vanilla-infused milk over the tea, watching the colors blend. Top with the foam, a sprinkle of ground cinnamon, and a star anise for a professional finish.
Expert Tips
- Steep Time: Don’t let the black tea steep for more than 5 minutes; otherwise, it will become astringent and overpower the delicate vanilla.
- Warm Your Mug: Rinse your mug with hot water before pouring the tea to keep your drink hot for much longer.
- The Cinnamon Swirl: If you aren’t using a frother, whisk the milk vigorously while heating it to create a bit of natural foam.
- Honey over Sugar: I find that honey complements the earthy notes of the tea and cinnamon much better than white granulated sugar.
- Make it Iced: Simply steep the tea and spices, let it cool, and pour over ice before adding cold milk for a refreshing summer version.
Storage & Reheating
While milk tea is best enjoyed immediately, you can steep a larger batch of the tea and cinnamon base and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days. When you’re ready for a cup, simply heat the tea base and add fresh, warm milk. I don’t recommend storing the tea once the milk has been added, as the texture can change.
Serving & FAQs
What should I serve with this? This pairs beautifully with simple shortbread cookies, a slice of lemon loaf, or even a spicy ginger snap to play off the cinnamon.
Can I use green tea instead? You can, but I recommend switching the vanilla for a bit of honey and lemon. Vanilla and cinnamon can sometimes overwhelm the delicate, grassy notes of green tea.
