This delicious meatball casserole was created with comfort food in mind. It combines homemade meatballs with a rich, creamy sauce. The dish features egg noodles as well and you’ll enjoy its robust, hearty flavor. This is a winter warmer of a dish but it’s great for any season, and is also something the whole family will love.

Every bite gives you tender meatballs, creamy sauce, melted cheese, and noodles—comfort food at its finest without a lot of fuss.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Combines creamy sauce and cheesy topping for maximum comfort
  • Homemade meatballs give great texture and flavor
  • Egg noodles soak up sauce beautifully
  • Makes a hearty main dish that feeds well
  • Versatile—easy to swap cheeses or add veggies if desired

Ingredients

(Serves 6)

For the Meatballs

  • ½ onion, finely chopped
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ tsp black pepper

For the Casserole

  • 1 pint heavy whipping cream
  • 2½ cups egg noodles
  • 1½ cups Swiss cheese, grated
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

1. Preheat Oven

Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

2. Mix & Shape Meatballs

In a mixing bowl, combine all the meatball ingredients except the olive oil. Knead gently until everything is well incorporated.
Form the mixture into evenly sized meatballs.

3. Sear Meatballs

Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium‑high heat.
Sear the meatballs until browned on all sides and cooked through. Remove and set aside.

4. Prepare Sauce

In the same skillet, add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and heavy cream. Simmer until thickened slightly. Season with salt and pepper.

5. Cook Noodles & Assemble

Cook egg noodles according to package instructions. Drain well.
Spread noodles in the bottom of a well greased 9×13‑inch baking dish.
Add the meatballs on top of the noodles. Pour the creamy sauce over everything. Sprinkle the Swiss cheese evenly over the top.

6. Bake & Rest

Bake for about 20‑25 minutes, until cheese is melted and golden.
Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving.

7. Garnish & Serve

Garnish with chopped parsley.
Serve hot.

Tips for Success

  • Use freshly grated Swiss cheese for better melt
  • Don’t overmix the meatball mixture—it keeps meatballs tender
  • Brown meatballs well for depth of flavor before baking
  • Reserve a little heavy cream or broth if sauce seems too thick
  • Let the bake rest for 5 minutes so it sets a bit, makes serving easier

Final Thoughts

This Swedish Meatball Noodle Bake hits all the comfort food sweet spots—rich, creamy sauce, hearty meatballs, tender noodles, and melted cheese. It warms you up inside, perfect for a cozy meal with family or friends.

It’s also flexible enough that you can make tweaks—use half beef/half pork, add mushrooms or peas, or use a different cheese if you like. But even in its basic form, it’s deeply satisfying, easy to make, and a crowd favorite.
